History
The aims of History at Grange Park are that pupils should enjoy the subject, get satisfaction from the work that they produce and gain a basic understanding of the history of the United Kingdom and its place in Europe and the wider world.
During Key Stage 2, we fulfil the ambition of the National Curriculum, we strive to inspire pupils’ curiosity and a sense of wonder about the past. Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to ask questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift through arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change over time, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups.
We believe that teaching History in this way is important in broadening children’s horizons, challenging preconceived ideas and developing life skills. We use Kapow as a resource, which is adapted to ensure it is accessible and meaningful for all our pupils it provides the framework to ensure progression and coverage of both the key knowledge strands and the key disciplinary strands. Each six lesson unit is based around an enquiry-based question and the children will also develop their understanding of key disciplinary concepts such as change and continuity, similarities and differences and sources of evidence. These concepts will be revisited as they are encountered in different contexts.
In Years 7, 8 and 9, history is taught as a discrete subject. In Years 10 and 11, it is taught as an optional subject where pupils work towards a GCSE. In all years, class work is reinforced with field trips, where possible, and practical activities.
